Hey friend! If you missed last night’s Wellness Check-In Live, we had a deep and necessary conversation about the fine line between prioritizing wellness and using it as an excuse to avoid responsibilities. Trust me, this topic hit home for many of us—including me.
The Realization That Changed Everything
I started the night by sharing something personal: I’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately, like I was showing up physically and emotionally, but not mentally. After some deep reflection, I realized something—I wasn’t truly prioritizing my wellness. I was avoiding my responsibilities and calling it “self-care.”
Earlier that day, I posted about the power of pivoting for wellness. Sometimes, we need to pause and realign, but how do we know when we’re genuinely prioritizing well-being and when we’re just running from what needs to be done? That’s exactly what we unpacked in last night’s session.
1. What Does It Mean to Truly Prioritize Your Wellness?
Prioritizing wellness isn’t about escaping—it’s about making choices that protect your mind, body, and spirit while staying committed to your growth.
Signs You’re Prioritizing Wellness the Right Way:
• You set boundaries and rest without guilt.
• You take intentional steps toward healing.
• You actively work on growth, not just take breaks.
• You’re honest with yourself.
I asked the community: Have you been truly taking care of yourself, or have you been hiding behind ‘self-care’? Let’s just say, I wasn’t the only one hiding behind self-care.
2. When ‘Wellness’ Becomes an Excuse
Let’s keep it real—there’s a difference between needing rest and avoiding growth. And I had to admit… I was avoiding my next level. The increase I’ve been praying for finally arrived, and instead of stepping into it, I shrank back. Success and growth can be scary, but we have to recognize when we’re running from them.
Signs You Might Be Avoiding Responsibilities in the Name of ‘Self-Care’:
• You keep saying, “I need a break,” but never return to action.
• You avoid challenges that require stepping outside your comfort zone.
• You ignore important tasks under the excuse of “protecting your peace.”
I asked the community: Have you ever procrastinated but called it ‘self-care’? It’s like we were living the same life… definitely related on that too.
3. Finding the Balance Between Self-Care & Responsibility
True wellness isn’t about choosing between self-care and responsibility—it’s about balancing both. So, how do we do that?
✨ Practical Tips to Find Balance:
• Schedule wellness like you schedule work. Make stillness a non-negotiable.
• Break big responsibilities into smaller steps. Overwhelm leads to avoidance.
• Recognize when you need rest vs. when you need discipline. Avoidance is disrespectful—to yourself and to God.
I shared a powerful quote that stuck with me: “Procrastination is the arrogant assumption that God owes you another chance to do tomorrow what He gave you the chance to do today.”
If you’re serious about growth, discipline is the key. It’s time to stop talking and start doing.
4. Taking Aligned Action
If you’re feeling stuck in burnout or avoidance, here’s how to break free:
1️⃣ Check in with yourself: Are you avoiding something out of fear, or do you genuinely need a break?
2️⃣ Make a plan: What’s one responsibility you can take action on today?
3️⃣ Stay accountable: Find a balance partner who helps you stay on track without pushing you to burnout.
5. Shift Your Mindset About Rest & Productivity
Many of us feel guilty when we rest, but we also feel overwhelmed when we work. The key? Honor the season you’re in.
• Sometimes, rest is the work—slowing down prepares you for greater success.
• Other times, pushing through discomfort is what leads to breakthrough.
That’s why I’m inviting you to join BBV Wellness, an accountability group for those ready to be intentional about BOTH rest and responsibility. For the next 7 days, we’re committing to:
✅ One wellness goal
✅ One action goal
Just seven days. You owe it to yourself!
Closing Thoughts
Last night’s conversation was a much-needed reality check. We explored the difference between self-care and avoidance, how to find balance, and the importance of taking aligned action.
Final reminder: Your wellness and your responsibilities don’t have to be at war. You can do both. And I believe in you.
If this spoke to you, share it with a friend, save it, and let’s keep each other accountable. See you next Wednesday for another Wellness Check-In Live! Until then—stay well, stay intentional, and stay blessed. I love y’all!
